Bridal Makeup Trial: What Really Happens and What to Ask

TL;DR

  • Book the trial 4 to 8 weeks before the wedding.
  • Bring your outfit, jewellery and reference photos.
  • Ask about longevity, touch-ups, timings and who styles the family.
  • Test the look in daylight and with flash before you approve it.

A bridal trial is the one appointment where you can change your mind without consequences. I use it to test the makeup, the hair, the timing and the light. Brides usually arrive worried about looking overdone. They leave with decisions settled.

What we are actually testing

We run the full makeup and hair session weeks before the wedding, the same way we will on the day. You wear the look, sit under daylight and flash, and we take photos. If a lip colour feels wrong or the base catches the light, we fix it in the room. The point is to remove surprises from your wedding morning.

I also watch how your skin behaves. Some foundations look fine for an hour and then separate around the nose. A trial is where that shows up, not at 5 AM on the wedding day.

When to book

Four to eight weeks before the wedding works for most brides. For dates between November and March, when Chennai books up fast, I ask for three to six months. Book the trial and the wedding date together. A trial without a confirmed date is just a nice afternoon.

If you are still shortlisting artists, read how to choose a bridal makeup artist first.

What happens in the session

I start with questions. Your outfit, jewellery, venue, the time you need to be ready, and who else is getting ready with you. Then we get to the makeup.

Skin prep comes first, chosen for your skin type rather than pulled from a fixed kit. I match the base at the jawline and step into daylight. That part takes as long as it takes. I would rather spend twenty extra minutes there than fix a grey cast in your album later.

Next are the eyes, then blush and lips. You can stop me at any point and change direction. We set the hair with your veil, gajra or jewellery in place, and check the saree drape if you are booking it. Before you leave, I photograph the finished look in daylight and with flash, then write down every product and shade so the wedding day is repeatable.

What to bring

  • Your wedding outfit, or a fabric swatch in the same colour
  • Your jewellery, especially the maang tikka and earrings
  • Your saree or dupatta if draping is part of the package
  • Three to five reference photos you love, and one you dislike
  • Your usual makeup bag, so I can see what your skin already tolerates
  • Contact lenses if you wear them
  • A clean face, with hair washed the previous day

Questions worth asking

  • Which finish suits my skin and the venue lighting?
  • How many hours will this last in Chennai humidity?
  • What will the base look like in flash photos?
  • HD or airbrush, and why that one for me?
  • What happens if I cry or sweat during the ceremony?
  • What is in the touch-up kit, and who carries it?
  • How long will the wedding-day application take?
  • Who else in the family can be styled, and at what cost?
  • What should I do to my skin in the final week?
  • Are lashes, lenses and draping included or add-ons?

Time and cost

Plan for two to three hours with me. A bridal trial at Anaplak is ₹3,000. Package pricing for bridal makeup, hair and draping is on our salon menu. Come with your date confirmed so I can hold the same artist for the wedding.

When to walk away

Ask questions if an artist does not look at your skin, does not check the base in daylight, or cannot explain why a product suits you. A trial that works in the salon mirror but not in your own camera roll is not finished. My bridal makeup service includes a skin and lighting check for that reason.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Should I wash my hair before a bridal makeup trial?
A: Wash it the previous day. Day-old hair holds pins better, and it shows me how the hairstyle will sit on the wedding day.

Q: Can I bring a friend?
A: One person is useful for a second opinion. More than one turns the session into a debate, so keep the group small.

Q: What if I do not like the trial look?
A: That is what the trial is for. We adjust the base, eye shape or lip colour in the same session, or book one follow-up. Nothing is final until you are happy.

Q: Do I need a trial if I am booking a full package?
A: Yes. The trial is where I personalise the package, and it lets me time the wedding morning properly, especially for early muhurthams.

Q: Can you do the trial at home?
A: I usually do trials at the salon because I need proper lighting and my full kit. Home trials are possible on request, depending on availability and travel charges.
