TL;DR
- Match the base to your neck and chest, never a lighter shade.
- Choose warm, golden or olive undertones over pink.
- Terracotta, brick and berry blush and lips show up in photos.
- Test the finished look with flash at the trial.

Get a consultationBrides sometimes ask me to make them two shades lighter. I say no, then explain why. Your neck, chest and face need to match. A lighter base shows up as a grey mask in flash photos, and you will see it in every album.
Undertone before shade
Look at the veins on your wrist and how your skin reacts to gold and silver. Warm undertones lean golden or olive. Cool undertones lean pink or red. Neutral sits between.
Most Indian skin tones are warm or olive, which is why foundations with a strong pink base look ashy. Find the undertone first. The shade number matters less.
Matching the base
I match at the jawline and check in daylight, not salon lighting. I test two shades and blend both sides of the face. A warm, golden or olive undertone almost always beats a pink one.
Pigmentation gets colour corrector before foundation. Piling on more foundation never hides it well. If your blouse is low-cut, I keep the chest and shoulders consistent so the face does not end at the neck.
Blush, highlight and lip colour
Soft pinks disappear on deeper skin. Warm terracotta, coral, brick and berry show up and look natural in photos. For highlight, I use warm gold or champagne. Silver and icy tones turn grey on camera. It goes on the high points of the cheek, not all over the face.
For lips, brick red, maroon, rosewood and warm browns photograph beautifully. If you want something lighter, choose a warm nude with a defined liner. Pale pink will wash you out.
Eyes
Traditional South Indian looks pair deep kajal with gold, bronze, copper or maroon shadow. Those tones flatter warm and olive skin and hold up in temple and hall lighting. Keep the brows filled softly. A hard, drawn-on brow fights the rest of the face.
What flash does to deeper skin
Deep skin reflects flash differently. The base needs to be flash-safe, and I avoid heavy silica powder because it leaves a white cast. At the trial I shoot with flash, in daylight, and on your phone before you leave.
What to tell your artist
- Show photos of brides with a similar skin tone, not lighter ones
- Say clearly that you do not want to look fairer
- Point out pigmentation or darkness around the mouth and eyes
- Ask which blush and lip shades they plan to use, and why
- Check the look on your own phone before you leave

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Which foundation shade is best for dusky skin?
A: One that matches your neck and chest with a warm, golden or olive undertone. Match the depth first, then worry about the finish.
Q: How do I stop my makeup looking grey in photos?
A: Avoid a pink or lighter base, use a warm colour corrector on dark areas, and skip heavy silica powder. Test with flash at the trial.
Q: Which lipstick suits dusky skin?
A: Brick red, maroon, rosewood, warm brown and terracotta. Pale pinks and frosts tend to wash out deeper skin.
Q: Can I wear a red bridal lehenga with dusky skin?
A: Yes. Deep reds, maroons and gold look striking on warm and olive skin. I balance the makeup with the outfit.
Q: Do I need different makeup for the reception?
A: Often yes. I go deeper on the eyes and lips because reception lighting is warmer. I keep the base consistent so the photos match.
